Young Slow Foodies Events?

topic posted Mon, May 31, 2004 - 5:20 PM by  Erika
I'm wondering if any of the US chapters have events that are targeted especially toward the younger or less affluent Slow Food enthusiasts? So many of the events we seem to have in San Francisco are quite enticing but definitely price out a lot of folks who would be interested in attending but can't shell out special-event dinner prices. The Opera, SFMOMA, The Commonwealth Club, and most other major cultural membership groups have special sub-groups and events targeting their younger members... so why not Slow Food? I'm thinking of tastings held in association with the ferry building's tenants, family-style dinners at local restaurants that embrace the Slow Food ethic, hands-on cooking and baking demonstrations, etc.

I think all your ideas sound great! I'm with OmOrganics.org, and one of our goals is to increase the demand for organics in the Bay Area, for all income levels. We also target the younger community, which is so often excluded from $150/plate dinners and benefits. I would love to help out with any planning, since we have close contacts with most local organic farms, restaurants that use organics, the Ferry Building Marketplace, Slow Food, Commonwealth Club, etc etc. We're also starting up a casual hands-on, farm-fresh dinner in the city every few Wednesdays starting next week. Let's make it happen!

Hells YES! Let's do this. Young to me is genX andy'ers (born '65-85), but I'd just call it young and let anybody in who wants in. (I'm on the national board of the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network, and that's how we do it roughly.

In the rest of my life I do market research (gerneral consumer stuff)and young audience development fundraising for cultural nonprofits...and I've spent some Q.T. in the natural/ gourmet/ oroganic/slow foods industry (dragonflyneov.com, Wild Oats, co-ops, Copia, the Ohio organics assn....)

I'll contact the national office and see what's involved in a convivium startup. There are already a bunch out here, two in Berkeley, two in SF (i think), a wine country one, etc. We'll have to watch toes.

      Great to meet you Melanie!

Thank you to all who are working to start this up. I am interested in being a member when the convivium gets going, and to help get it started if needed. Please keep posting on this subject.

          Hey,
Haven't heard much around here lately...anyways, I'm now moved in (Menlo Park) and would love to help get something started! Anybody else still interested?

I am still interested, but unsure of how to get things started. Any word for those looking into it?

I'm new to tribe, but a lifelong bay area resident who spends way too much of my money and time eating well. I'd love to be involved with a young bay area slow food group, while I'm intersted in the ideas of Slow Food I've always been dissuaded from it by the pricey events and the feeling that my age group is just not included.

So, what's the status on this project?
